Cougar Place is a cultivated garden environment designed for upper-division undergraduates and graduates that are seeking apartment-style living.  It offers the convenience and safety of residing on-campus at affordable prices.  There are 10 residential buildings, and 2 office buildings.  The 400 unit complex contains two room suites with patios.  The living space is a single room with a shared bath.  Each room is fully furnished.  Twenty units are barrier free for use by students with physical disabilities.  Eighty units are equipped with small kitchenettes for indoor cooking, including a stove, refrigerator, and sink.  Live-in staff includes a professional Area Coordinator (AC), 1 Hall Director and 6 student Resident Assistants (RA's).

Building 2.  The entrance to Cougar Place has the mailroom, AC office, computer lab, and TV lounge on one side, and the laundry room and a kitchen on the other.

Pricing.  Pricing for out-of-state and international students is the same.  Prices shown are based on a full academic year agreement (Fall & Spring semesters).  Residents will pay for one semester at a time (half the Academic Year price is charged to the student's fee bill each semester).  The meal plan is also charged in the same manner and at the same time as the room charge (half the Academic Year price is charged to the student's fee bill each semester).  Students enrolled for Summer Session I or IV may reside on-campus during that session for half of the full Summer rate.

Security.  Cougar Place is enclosed by a fence.  The main entrance to Cougar Place has a security gate that is controlled during the evening.  All residents are required to use their Cougar 1Card to gain entry when the gates are controlled, preventing unauthorized people from entering residential areas.   A Desk Assistant is stationed 24 hours a day in Building 2.  Residents will receive a special patented key to access their room.  The key must be used to lock and unlock the door from the outside; a latch operates the lock from inside the room.  The door has a peep hole.  There are 6 RAs for the 10 buildings.  The University Police (UHPD) is across the street.

Smoking.  The RLH facilities are smoke-free. Residents are not allowed to smoke in the buildings.

Floor Plans.  All rooms are single rooms.  Two rooms share (and are connected) by one bathroom.  Some rooms are equipped with kitchenettes, and some are designed for students with disabilities.

Cougar Place buildings are similar to each other.  Each building has two floors.

Bathroom.  Two rooms share one bath.  Each bathroom has one sink, toilet, and tub with shower.  There are two doors into the bathroom, one for each room.  Each of these doors lock on both sides for privacy and security.

Disabled Residents.  Twenty units are designed for residents with disabilities or wheelchairs.  Differences include easy to use door handle and locking mechanism, and bathroom.  Proximity cards for the front gate will be available for disabled residents. Attendant Care Services are available to Cougar Place residents.

How do I use the proximity reader in Cougar Place?

Disabled residents that qualify for the use of the proximity reader should replace their regular Cougar 1Card with a new proximity-capable Cougar 1Card at the Cougar 1 Card Office in the University Center.

The proximity card (or prox card) should be passed in front of the proximity reader.  The reader can detect the prox card up to 18" away in ideal conditions.  The prox card may remain in a wallet or bag as it is passed by the prox reader.  Wheel chaired residents should be able to roll by the prox reader.  It may be necessary for the prox card to be placed on the resident so that it is on the side nearest to prox reader to properly activate it.

Once activated, the gate will open.  Residents will still be able to use the normal card swipe to open the gate.

The gate will remain open and unlocked for most of the daytime, and controlled during the evening hours.
