Ethernet
Ethernet
connectivity is
available in Cougar Place, Moody Towers, and the
Quadrangle. This service allows residents to
access the internet from their rooms. Students will need an Ethernet
card and internet software on their computers to
use this service. If you have a wireless card, this service may be accessed in the lobby areas of Moody Towers, Oberholtzer Hall (OB), and Cougar Place. In addition, wireless connectivity is available in the dining rooms, the OB Ballroom, and most academic buildings on campus.
For additional information on wireless access,
please click
here.
Most newer computers
typically come with an Ethernet network
card. Network
cards usually range between $20 and $50 for
desktops and about twice as much for laptops..
If yours did not, they can be purchased and installed in most local
computer stores such as Cougar Byte (x3-5310) in
the University Center (UC). Make sure the card
you get is compatible with your computer and the RLH network.
If the network card
is not installed, install the card in your
computer as directed in your card's instruction
manuals. Follow your card's directions to
properly install the software drivers for the
network card.
All residents must supply their own Ethernet cords,
as all areas have been upgraded to use the
standard Ethernet cables with RJ45 connectors on
both ends. These jacks will be red in color to distinguish them from the telephone connections.

Notes
-
RLH-IT does NOT, at
this time, setup or
troubleshoot problems with a resident's personal
computer, the Ethernet
card or related software;
assistance for University supported software and TCP/IP configuration
can be obtained from
UH
Information Technology Customer Services at
x31411. If the jack is physically damaged,

submit a Service Request. Please note
that RLH does not supply any software or
hardware that you may require to setup your access to the ResNet.
-
Some
network cards for laptops require the use of a
special cable (usually included with the card)
that may require an additional coupler (found at
most electronic stores) to connect to the
Ethernet cable from RLH. The coupler is an RJ45
to RJ45 connector that allows you to join your
cable's RJ45 end into our cable's RJ45 end.

The
terms Ethernet card, network card, and NIC are used
interchangeably in this documentation and are
the same thing. Card is the same as adapter in
this documentation. You normally see the terms
Ethernet card/adapter and even network interface
card (or NIC).
-
Computers using
versions of Windows earlier than 2000 or XP are
not supported; versions of Mac earlier than OS X
or other OS, such as Linux, are not supported.

Before attempting to connect to the
Student Network (ResNet) you must have an antivirus
installed and the appropriate service packs. You
can visit our Remediation Center by clicking
here.
In order to connect to ResNet, you will need to have your CougarNet User name and Password. All First time
users will need to register for CougarNet by calling 713-743-1411 or by email at
support@uh.edu.
If you already have a CougarNet account and wish
to reset your password please click
here.
Note:
Gaming consoles must be registered at Moody Towers
Service Center located on the ground floor. You
will be required to provide your Student ID, the
MAC address of your game console, and your
CougarNet username (not your password) when
submitting the
Game Console Registration Form.
Ethernet speed upgrades do not apply to gaming
consoles.
The
authentication process includes gathering the MAC
address of your computer’s network card. Going through this process will
insure that you are able to connect to the
network; you cannot connect until you do
so.
NO PERSONAL INFORMATION IS GATHERED
or stored by this operation, other than your MAC
address.
